"Since the strike of 1894, the primary historical issue posed by George M. Pullman's model workers' community has been whether it should be interpreted as vicious exploitation or as naive paternalism....This full-length history of the town of Pullman considerably expands this framework. [Buder] has written an objective, well-documented book....He has attempted to understand, rather than summarily condemn, the motives of its founder. He has even removed it fromthe confines of labour history by treating it as well from the perspective of community planning....Pullman will prove useful to historians in a wide range of fields."--Stuart Blumin, Economic HistoryReview"Since the strike of 1894, the primary historical issue posed by George M. • I learned a lot about about the benefits and dangers of conformity.

The Pullman experiment of a company town built around an emerging product industry is unique. In the midst of a perceived utopia, there emerged a rebellion when Pullman was perceived to make his town one of likemindedness. This book is superb in its detailing how the massive project was undertaken and how impressive it was in both scope and detail, seeming to meet both the company and personal need. One can easily read and digest this book slowly, and if he/she takes time to think about how this all might or might not work today, one can get a deeper understanding into a human's need for work satisfaction while maintain a personal spirit and identity.
