Hey, it's me, Nathan "the b-movie king" Fairbanks. "Naked Lunch" is a masterpiece, pure and simple. As far a films by cult director David Cronenberg, it is arguably his best. It's a departure from Cronenberg's typical, and usually great, forays into the horror genre. Cronenberg has created something truly unique using William S. Burroughs book by the same name as the basis for the film. It is strange, surreal, and packed with bizarre imagery, but Cronenberg doesn't just rely on those elements. He has crafted a complex film with rich, fascinating characters. Peter Weller (Robocop) plays the writer in the midst of writing his greatest novel ever. In order to write the book, he gets all messed up on drugs and travels to a trippy place he calls "Interzone". This is a place were typewriters turn into talking bugs and a potent drug is extracted from green creatures known a mugwumps. I know this sounds weird, but it is only the beginning. Chances are if you are reading this, you already have some idea of if you will like this film are not. If it's peaked your interest, chances are you're going to enjoy it a great deal. However, if you feel weary, follow your instincts. Most likely you will find the story confusing, the characters quite unattractive, and the whole film just way too "artsy". As for the rest of you adventurous souls, take a walk on the wild side and watch this one by the great David Cronenberg.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Criterion always gives the viewer movies that are classic and thought-provoking! The Naked Lunch is one of these. Directed by David Cronenberg using a William S. Burroughs book, the movie is very loosely based on his life. Beware, this movie is not for everyone's taste and has an addiction, sex, and Bugs! Yes, I said Bugs, Cockroaches, and Centipedes in it, very large bugs. The hero was a bug exterminator who finds his supply of bug powder diminishing because his wife is using it to get high! Fired from his job he takes an assignment to the Interzone writing essays. He is also running from the law for killing his wife, albeit, accidentally. This just a brief summary of a movie that is simply too complicated to explain.

Naked Lunch is a bizarre, semi-autobiographical and very poignant investigation into addiction, sexuality, and voice. Freely adapted from the book (of the same name) by William S. Burroughs, this film offers up a multi-layered pastiche-- of life events, hallucinations, and Spy vs. Spy "interior monologues" -- which serves to gel into a single overall effect (upon the viewer)not unlike Johnny Depp's portrayal of the chaotic life of Hunter S. Thompson in the film Fear and Loathing in LA! Perhaps one fo the most disturbing elements of Naked Lunch, for writers anyway, is the (very dark) suggestion that the author must "kill" that which inspires him/her in order to successfully control the effect of a written work. Literate and mature in both subject matter and presentation, the visuals of this film will make one think twice about touching ever touching a keyboard again! ;-)Vollständige Rezension lesen

Great movie, even if I was a little lost at times. Bizarre and funny. No one is naked :)
