Over four years in the making, the highly anticipated Max Payne adds a new aspect of stylistic storytelling to the action-based 3D shooter. The game was developed solely as a single-player adventure and the designers at Finland's Remedy Entertainment focused on creating an experience that would make players care at least as much about the main character as they would about finish times or frag counts. Tried and true devices of pulp fiction and film noir are employed in this computer game, drawing the player into the dark story through gripping motivations of revenge and self-preservation.<br><br>Technically, Max Payne offers its own brand of state-of-the-art graphics and sound. Detailed, high-resolution environments are deformable, as walls become riddled with bullet holes of various sizes and shreds of paper, plastic, plaster, and tile fall to the ground, each in their own distinctly realistic manners. Admittedly inspired by the cinematic works of John Woo and Sam Peckinpah, the game applies stylistic techniques borrowed from action films as well, not only to add to the mood of the story but also to enhance gameplay. The title's signature "bullet time" gunfights can be played out in slow motion to provide a familiar dramatic effect and also to allow the player a chance to better situate himself and pick out prime targets in the chaos of flying lead. <br><br>While the storyline still determines the events that need to happen in each mission and level, the Max Payne is designed to allow the player to decide exactly how goals are accomplished. While the game must adhere to the linear nature of a plot-driven experience, it strives to also allow an engaging sense of freedom and control through expansive level design. Large, seamless areas are intended to offer the player a sense of new space to conquer as he sees fit, whether methodically sneaking about to avoid detection or running quickly and violently through a swarm of enemies with both guns blazing.

It shows it's age, but MAX PAYNE is still great!
So, I had seen the movie "MAX PAYNE" a few days ago, and after hearing about how there were two games released around 2001-2002 or so, I jumped on getting it. I was somewhat surprised how easily I missed these games. Anyhow - I finally got the game in the mail, and my, it was definitely interesting. The storyline differs right from the start even - but it's still interesting and while the movie might have helped, I was already curious about the story. I read the instruction manual, and along with the tutorial, got a slight kick out of how it was implemented (the "Enemy Dispenser" was an interesting touch.. Definitely something different from other tutorials). I haven't manage to actually sit down and play far enough to my first actual save but I like what I've seen. ... Controls are a bit awkward. It's a bit jumpy, and the movement style that's taken care of with both Analogue Sticks are a royal pain in the derriere so to speak.. It's going to take a while to get used to them, I know that for a fact. Graphics: It's dated. Very much so. Compared to GTA: Vice City (also published/made/whatever by Rockstar), there's a HUGE gap. Graphics took a fair hit - almost about Gamecube quality - for the most part, it's early PS2 quality games. It doesn't distract from the gameplay much, however the choppiness also gets worse because of the choppy and laggy framerate. A common issue for PS2 games. The models are simple and compared to the newer PS2 games there's a HUGE difference. Despite these issues it's composed well and it doesn't really dent the game. Story: Haven't played much but it seems interesting and involving enough, despite having seen the movie. Other: Dunno what else to put.. Heh. Overall I liked what I HAD managed to play, and I hope to give it a shot at actually beating the game.

Max Payne is one of the best games for the PS2 I've played. It's an action game mixed with a bit of mafia action. You play as Max Payne, an NYPD cop who transferred to the DEA after the murder of his wife and baby daughter. He goes undercover to investigate the mafia and the dealing of a new drug on the streets called Valkyr or V. When Max arrives at the Roscoe Street Subway Station, he needs to find his partner, Alex. After he does, something terrible happens and Max is framed for a crime committed by the mafia. That's all the details I'll reveal. This game is wonderful and has cool plot twists. It is challenging in some spots of the game but you'll get the hang of it after a few tries. I do recommend this game to all. 5/5 overall.Max Payne is one of the best games for the PS2 I've played. Years ago someone broke into my apartment and still Max Payne from me, i have over 83 games and i consider myself a “ game collector” . This guys had the game. and i’m glad he shipped it so promptly. He was a week late but he noticed right away and sent the game as quick as he could !

Great things about Max Payne for PlayStation 2.
I have a used copy of this game to play and a sealed copy to keep sealed forever. The graphics are good, gameplay is good, controls are good, the music and sound effects are good. I love the Max Payne series.
