Product Information

Master director Greenaway (THE PILLOW BOOK) outdoes himself with this grisly fairy tale. The thief, Albert Spica, (Gambon) is a gangster, repugnant and boorish, who holds court at the same table in his opulent restaurant every night surrounded by his lackeys (Tim Roth and the late Ian Dury included). When his cultured and repressed wife Georgina (Mirren) becomes magnetically attracted to a solitary diner in the restaurant, the two begin a secret affair under the nose of her dangerous husband. With the help of the restaurant's chef, the time the lovers share is kept secret from the vicious Albert...for a while. Despite the breathtaking production design and artful camera work, this violent, disturbing and very darkly comic work is not for everyone. Those with the stomach for it, however, will reap generous rewards.

    Not for the faint of heart!

    I love Peter Greenaway. Considered one of the most controversial directors from Great Britain, if you like stimulating, thought-provoking movies, you'll love "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". Packed with lush visuals, Greenaway presents a story of indulgence, passion, and a serious twist of the macabre and dark. I highly recommend trying to secure a copy of this film as soon as you can- the DVD has been out-of-print for some time, and copies are getting harder and harder to acquire.

    The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

    Review! Goodness, I lost this movie some how and I tried to obtain a new copy, I tried all the movie houses and the same story "Out of print". I turned to e-bay and found a copy, thank goodness. First of all I love Helen Mirren, as she is one of my favorite actresses. I thought she was superb in the movie. I like the the movie for its cinematography, then after watching it for several times, the plot of the conflict between money and art and culture. Yeah, you better watch closely, the movie gets more in depth each time you watch it.

    Very special movie. Great story and the play of the actors is superb. Well worth the money.

    sensational movie

    helen mirren is great in this movie! there are some super sex scenes in it as an added bonus, and the movie has all the usual symbolism, etc., to fulfill intellectual needs, too. the ending is unreal.
