Product Information

Hailed byThe New York Times Book Reviewas a "grippingly told" story of "power and relevance," here is the true, untold account of the first American women to prove their mettle under combat conditions. Later, during three years of brutal captivity at the hands of the Japanese, they also demonstrated their ability to survive. Filled with the thoughts and impressions of the women who lived it, "every page of this history is fascinating" (The Washington Post). We Band of AngelsIn the fall of 1941, the Philippines was a gardenia-scented paradise for the American Army and Navy nurses stationed there. War was a distant rumor, life a routine of easy shifts and evenings of dinner and dancing under the stars. On December 8 all that changed, as Japanese bombs rained on American bases in Luzon, and the women's paradise became a fiery hell. Caught in the raging battle, the nurses set up field hospitals in the jungles of Bataan and the tunnels of Corregidor, where they saw the most devastating injuries of war, and suffered the terrors of shells and shrapnel. But the worst was yet to come. As Bataan and Corregidor fell, a few nurses escaped, but most were herded into internment camps enduring three years of fear and starvation. Once liberated, they returned to an America that at first celebrated them, but later refused to honor their leaders with the medals they clearly deserved. Here, in letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts, is the story of what really happened during those dark days, woven together in a compelling saga of women in war.

Elizabeth Norman presents a war story in which the main characters never kill one of the enemy, or even shoot at him, but are nevertheless heroes....First on Bataan, then moved to Corregidor, they were under almost constant shell fire, were always hungry, close to starvation, had horrendous diseases to deal with despite a shortage or even a complete lack of proper medicines, getting little or no sleep, nothing in the way of recreation -- yet they were a true band of angels, inspiring all the men whom they were there to help. In a squalid prison camp, they remained giants, despite their small size....They were the bravest of the brave, who endured unspeakable pain and torture. • We Band of Angels

This was an excellent read. Makes one appreciate all we have. Makes you think of what the human heart can accomplish for the safety and well being of others under terrible circumstances!! Have a box of Kleenex next to you when reading. Hard to put down. Full of U.S. history during the youthful years of the “ Greatest Generation”. Also my book purchase was in excellent condition!

  • We Band of Angels

This is a fantastic book. It portrays nursing in the actual light that it is: a tough, all-encompassing job that follows you everywhere because you take it with you in your heart, and as these women did, in their health which was many times adversely affected by the severe malnutrition and various diseases contracted due to the poor sanitary conditions. Every one of these nurses proudly wore their uniforms as I do this day, even if it is not a military one. I can empathize with the nurses when they left the soldiers in the jungle because all nurses feel that way at one time or another at the end of their shift, but we have someone to watch over our patients, whereas they had to leave the soldiers in the jungle with no means of defending themselves, and many of the soldiers were ...

  • Book, We BAnd Of Angels

What I liked. This book, which is historically accurate, was authored to honor and expose the horrific POW experience of nearly one hundred nurses. All were captured while on duty in the Philippines in the earliest months of WWII. Disliked? Nothing it was a fine read at a marvelous price. Why bought? I am passionate about many things including but not limited to my country , it's history, human biographies, and the secrets of strong women. This book covered all that in a fine, well written manner. Also the price was unbelievably affordable.

  • The amazing story of nurses dedication and sacrifice for their patients

What amazing women. This is a fascinating story of unsung heros, the women who voluntarily put themselves in harms way to take care of their patients. Edith Cavell was our our unsung hero of WWI who sacrificed herself to care for her patients. These nurses remained behind to take care of their patients. We have so much to learn from these wonderful women. Nurses can be relied upon to rise to whatever the occassion demands. Florence Nightingale's legacy lives on in the following generations of nurses throught the turbulent engagements that are created-nurses are there to care for their patients. Makes me so proud to be a nurse and its important we all recognize and pay homage to their dedication.

  • History we need to know.

We are losing the history of our brave women, who served in so many areas of our many wars. They often were not honored until long after their deaths. These important first hand accounts have been lost among all the hyped best sellers. Read these books an pass them on. This book was harrowing at times and it is hard to imagine the suffering that occurred, but these women persisted.
