While on his annual fishing trip with friends, Stewart (Gabriel Byrne) discovers a dead woman (Tatea Reilly) floating in a mountain river. Deciding that there's nothing they can do to help her at this point, Stewart, Carl (John Howard), Rocco (Stelios Yiakmis), and Billy (Simon Stone) continue their weekend, calling the police only after they've finished fishing and come down from the mountain. When they return to their small town of Jindabyne in New South Wales, they're surprised when their families and the community treat them with anger and hostility for their selfish, callous behavior. Stewart's wife, Claire (Laura Linney), is particularly disillusioned, calling into question her entire relationship with Stewart and their young son, Tom (Sean Rees-Wemyss), who himself has been getting into dangerous situations hanging around with a slightly older, troubled girl, Caylin-Calandria (Eva Lazzaro). And tensions are even higher because the murdered woman was a member of a nearby Aboriginal community, sparking cries of racism. Inspired by the Raymond Carver short story 'So Much Water So Close To Home', JINDABYNE was written by playwright Beatrix Christian and directed with a subtle elegance by Ray Lawrence (BLISS, LANTANA). The film features gorgeous cinematography by David Williamson and outstanding performances all around. JINDABYNE touches on themes such as family, murder, abandonment, racism, faith, and redemption, but, at its heart, it's about the everyday choices people make in life--and how they live with the consequences.

Such is the argument when four Aussie mates encounter a corpse floating in a remote pool and decide to hold off reporting their discovery until after their annual fishing weekend in a rugged corner of New South Wales. Garage owner Stewart (Gabriel Byrne) doesn’t even mention it to his wife (Laura Linney) on his return, and when the news does leak out it doesn’t just exacerbate tensions in their already rocky marriage, it exposes the cultural abyss between the white fishermen and the appalled family of the Aboriginal victim. For the indigenous communities, the spirit lives on after the body, so this is an upsetting act of disrespect, and the perpetrators seem uncomprehendingly ... She’s dead. They can’t help her. Best to leave her in the water where at least she’ll be preserved. Like his previous film ‘Lantana’, Lawrence’s latest uses the shock of mortality to send dramatic ripples off in all directions, though here the scope’s even wider than that film’s engrossing survey of the battle of the sexes, taking in an array of lives stymied by both personal and colonial histories, suggesting that the scars of racism are far from healed and even that white Australians are interlopers in this imposing terrain. Thankfully, there’s little preachiness in these waves of complexity, since the film is grounded in the emotional immediacy of Byrne’s befuddled masculinity and the reliably brilliant Linney’s counter-productive rage at small-town narrow-mindedness. Although you could argue that the ending’s unpersuasively over-resolved given the myriad divisive issues raised by Beatrix Christian’s probing screenplay, the seamless overall blend of involving domestic turmoil and haunted national self-questioning is quite some achievement.

All shot against the stark yet beautiful landscape of inland Australia. The music score, the script, the character exploration, direction, everything should make you question why this film is not known to wider audience. I bought this dvd because my son has been living in australia for the last 18 months, and he told us to get it as it gave a reasonable outlook on the type of countryside he was living at. The dvd played well and yes the scenery was remarkable to look at, the supplier was very efficient and packaged the dvd well and it arrived very quickly.Although the story was left in limbo at the end (it maybe an opening for a sequel),I now look forward to seeing my son when he visits us later this year.Meanwhile we can remind ourselves of his part of australia as he actualy lives in JINDABYNE.I bought this dvd because my son has been living in australia for the last 18 months, and he told us to get it as it gave a reasonable outlook on the type of countryside he was living at.
