Leonardo DiCaprio fights terrorists for the CIA in this rapid-fire thriller from director Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR, BLACK HAWK DOWN). While Roger Ferris (DiCaprio) gets his hands dirty on the teeming Arab streets, his handler Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) watches from Washington via spy satellite, cheerfully giving bull-in-a-china-shop style orders while picking up his kids from school. Innocent lives are lost, buildings blow up, and the threat of winding up beheaded on the internet is always one move away. LIES is decked out from front to back with fascinating bits of Arabic and espionage minutiae as it races along its wild mission to track down an elusive terrorist sect leader. Crowe has fun in his portly Southern-accented INSIDER mode, while DiCaprio does his usual anguished moral suffering over the fate of individuals (To Crowe's Hoffman, it's all just part of war and nobody's innocent). As the suave head of Jordanian intelligence, Mark Strong gives a scene-stealing, cobra-like performance that clashes beautifully with Crowe's "ugly American" bullying. The beautiful Golshifteh Farahani plays the obligatory love interest, the nurse who treats Ferris's regularly occurring battle and torture wounds. When most action heroes are completely healed within minutes of every fight, it's refreshing--in a grisly sort of way--to see how Ferris's wounds bruises pile up. The solid, punchy script is by William Monahan (THE DEPARTED) from the David Ignatius novel.

This pair of odd couple, government ordained off-the-books murder incorporated thuggish protagonists' alternates between butting heads over covert murder methods, and moments of intended comic relief banter which is just not funny, under the circumstances. After pulling off an incineration of an entire insurgent hideaway in the desert, during which these unbelievably dumb and dumber seasoned fighters have no idea that Leonardo's ... Ferris' new assignment is to lure an apparently shy mystery terrorist out into the cold, with a little help from the local intelligence chief (Mark Strong), a dandy in designer suits who has his nails done between pulling out with pliers those of his disappeared torture victims. When captured for a bit himself, Ferris takes some applied finger crushing in relative stride, while remaining lucid enough to deliver a speech scolding his captors for being sucker dupes as fleeting tools of the oil companies. This is the world we are live in
Ridley Scott is usually one you can depend on to make a good, sometimes fantastic, film, and it'll mostly be well-done. This definitely fits the last two mentioned qualities. The plot is impeccably well-written, and keeps developing very well throughout. By no surprise, DiCaprio delivers another winning performance here as the young CIA field agent who is given authority within a short time period to do what he wants to get what his superior wants. Here he is cocky, brave and smart, exactly what his character should be. He is the true lead of the film because without him, the story and film would be meaningless. His solid performance also makes the film better. DiCaprio is now recognizable as a character who completely immerses himself in the role. His "Leo-the-pretty-boy" days are long ... Ridley Scott is usually one you can depend on to make a good, sometimes fantastic, film, and it'll mostly be well-done. This definitely fits the last two mentioned qualities. Ridley Scott's regular Crowe takes a back seat here, to be DiCaprio's supervisor. Crowe delivers the best performance here. From his Arkansas accent to his leniency at handling somewhat drastic situations, Crowe steals almost every scene he's in. It's good, really, because it makes his character slimy yet interesting. Although his role is understated and underused a bit, it also makes his character cautious. On top of that the cinematography and editing are careful and effective. This shows the Arab culture in a neutral light at certain parts, and actually features spoken Arabic, in nice amounts, which I would say should earn it recognition(in addition to all else I've mentioned in this review). I would say that this is a thriller-drama, with action elements... do not watch it expecting constant car-chases or shootings, albeit it is surely intense. It brings up several well-stated and solid points, for and against several sides, and offers food for thought. There is near-constant language, and it is always moderate or more. Also, there is a lot of violence and a little sheer brutality, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Body of Lies
I decided to buy this movie because of the powerhouse actors and the sceen writer. I felt if it was even close to the unbelivable standard set by The Departed it was well worth being in my BluRay collection. While I do not think It was as great as The Departed It is very well able to stand on its own. Russel Crowe was as I expeted great, he pulled of the roll as a out of shape pencil pusher and C.I.A feild handler much better then even I expected and I am a long time admirer of his acting. Leanardo seems to grow sharper and more confident of his skill with every movie, In my humble opinion I believe he is the very best of his generation and stands up strong against any of the all time greats. I feel the story line and writing is very srong and the plot is very believable and that is a very ... I decided to buy this movie because of the powerhouse actors and the sceen writer.
