I feel like I could write a novel about what this collection of Richard Wagner's music means to me, particularly, “Tristan und Isolde.” Nevertheless, Tannhäuser and the Siegfried Idyll (a symphonic poem) are supreme masterworks in their own right. The Vienna Philharmonic in the skillful hands of Herbert von Karajan achieves a regal elegance, rarefied, and nuanced, in its evocation of Richard Wagner's sensual and tragic Music Drama —— the highlight for me being the Liebestod (love death) —— sung by Jessye Norman. There is footage of the Liebestod performance online, it is chromatic, expressive, and transcendent, listen to those words: “Mild und leise wie er lächelt,” ethereal, and painfully delicious, as Jessye Norman portraying Isolde rises in beauty, and splendor in her heartfelt aria —— only to sink deep into a vast dreamland of unconsciousness. This is one of my favorite Wagnerian performances forever immortalized on CD. This is music for sophisticated musical pallets (like a fine wine) (e.g., Bordeaux or a vintage Cabernet Sauvignon). Wagner's level of dramatic writing both compositionally and in literary form is rapturous, deeply evocative, and mysterious! I highly recommend the CD for its heightened level of sensuality, art, and drama —— that in turn becomes deeply spiritual and otherworldly.Vollständige Rezension lesen
