perfect size and price to try out Holbein's unusual formula, and specialty pastel colors, before dropping $$$$ on the full set. Holbein is known for their huge range pastel colors, and some oddly vaque descriptions of their pencil form factor. (not quite oil based, not truly wax based, and some proprietary spin, lol) Uni colored pencils (the high end 100/240) are curiously vague about their formulation in the same way. Coincidentally, they are both VERY very similar (if not identical) in the way they laydown, blend, and respond to surfaces: Laydown is remarkably opaque, and smooth. Blending is a whole different beast, and really is something you'll be pleased you can experiment with BEFORE you spend on the big set. I definitely am, and I'm still experimenting with them, bc I'm still not sure if I will buy a large set. The unexpected ways these pencils interact with each other, and different surfaces can be quite counterintuitive, and honestly, I still get frustrated, as I have yet to get comfortable using them with consistent or regular results. this is probably just me . buy these. try them. play! yay!Vollständige Rezension lesen

Great set for someone interested in Holbein pencils but can't quite pony up ~$300 for a full set - the pastel section seems to be what makes it unique. The lead hardness is between that of Prismacolor and Polychromos, but leaning toward more prismacolor-softness. Barely touch a Holbein to paper and color goes down! The picture I'm attaching is a page I colored out of Tracy Horner's "Peace of Art" and 3-4 layers for each color.

I bought these pencils as I wanted to try them out and this listing was an excellent price. The pencils are well made, have a good colour range for lighter colours. They are not washed out colours just very useful lighter shades. They lay down well, reminiscent of the Polychromosmrather than the softer Prismacolor. I can't find anything to criticise.

These pencils were lovely light shades and are very good quality. They were Well packed when received. After the extra VAT and another £8.00 for Royal Mail handling charge because these were shipped from Japan. I ended up paying another £12.00. They weren’t exactly cheap in the first place as good artist pencils generally are quite expensive. Unfortunately I will not be ordering these again, due to the extra charges. I do understand that little can be done about this cost, but I think I will order pencils in the UK in future.

I’ve never used Holbein Artist pencils before and I regret it now because these pencils are really great. They are not too soft, not too hard. Very comfortable to use and the colors are beautiful and rich. I didn’t even know pastel colors could be rich! I am very happy with these and I recommend them warmly. Seller sent them well protected.
