There is simply nothing made today that compares with the Marantz 2275.
We often have both the Marantz 2275 and the 2270 side by side in our store. I have lifted literally hundreds of these receivers. In preparation for this review I double checked the specs and was stunned to see that the 2270 weighed one pound more! After some thought, it all made sense. Although the 2275 has Dolby and two more control buttons, the 2270 has more metal components including a larger portion of extruded aluminum faceplate. The look of the 2275 could be considered more impressive. Those extra buttons and the lights that accompany those functions are eye catching. Watch for units that appear to have all function lamps lit at the same time. On these units the plastic lamp housing (part of that pound) has melted. There is a real temptation to use the more available .250 milliamp instead of the proper .20 and that small additional amount of current can be devastating over hours of operating. Especially with the extra heat of driving your speakers hard. 2325’s suffer from the same issue. LED lamps are a great option for the 2275. You will find that some units require jumpers, while others do not. The newer units wiring does not require jumpers between pre in and amp out. Also, the older units came with the brown vinyl veneer cases, the newer with black. What about the sonics, you ask? They are fantastic. If a large, warm sound stage is what you are looking for- look no further. Remember, these units are from the time when FM was king and the tuner section on these units reflects that. The five inputs are standard for many Marantz models. Cd’s, Ipod’s and yes, tape decks are great pairings with these flagship units. The preamp section of the 2275 is a control freaks delight. You can control front speaker set separately from the rear set. Also, you just can’t find a new receiver made today with treble, mid and bass control- well worth the lack of a remote. When buying a vintage piece of audio equipment keep one thing in mind- it’s not IF the unit is going to need service, but WHEN. This is a mind and soul freeing concept that you must embrace. We all have bought new black faced plastic junk from our neighborhood superstore. When they fail, we are mortified! With good reason- you can’t work on that stuff. When it fails you are done for the most part. Find a vintage stereo repair that’s not too far from your home and rejoice! Your Marantz 2275 can be worked on and often will just need a little tune up from time to time. If you're into wood, get yourself a WC-22 walnut sleeve. It dresses the unit up and looks fantastic. Remember that the rear of your 2275 goes through the front of the sleeve first when installing.

Power, great soundstage and controls. Beauty that does require servicing.
I'll never forget the first time I gazed upon a Marantz receiver. It was the mid 70's and our neighbor, an Air Force pilot had just bought a 4270 on base. Wow, I remember thinking, that sound is amazing and the appearance, the look, was hard to keep my eyes off of. The impression of my first Marantz experience is still with me, like my first love- which was also circa 1975. The 2270 is the strictly two channel cousin of the 4270 and has the same velvety rich warm sound. These units really were top shelf for most Americans who cared about music at that time. The build quality that Marantz poured forth from Japan was excellent and is a testament to why many of the units are around today. The Marantz 2270 owes much of its headroom and warmth to its huge transformer which totally set it apart from most of the 1980's IC generation. There soon was a preoccupation with sound that was termed accurate but was in fact overly bright and quite frankly brittle. This led to the "wonder" era of separates that weren't really separate and cheap plastic black faced units that lacked soundstage as well as depth. When 2270 production ended in 1978, the world was changing and so was I. I lost my love affair with Marantz during that time and concentrated instead on being an "adult". A chance meeting, like seeing an old flame at the airport or restaurant, reignited my love of the 22XX and 42XX Marantz receivers. Today I appreciate them for both their beautiful looks and sound. Not to say these buxom beauties are faultless, because they are not. The dark faced units like the 2270 and 4270 use velum paper that yellows with age and gives the normally blue dials a sickly green look when needing to be replaced. The original incandescent festoon lamps on both light and dark faced units, heat and degrade the inside of the plastic housing over the course of years. The advent of LED's has brought back the luster and brightness to weak dial displays and they last ten times longer with little excess heat. I have owned the McIntosh MAC 1700 and 1900 receivers and their build quality is second to none. But you can tell McIntosh never really wanted to drive that business. It seems that they knew then, that the Marantz 2270 would own the receiver side of the 1970's HiFi audio world, and in my eyes always will.
