it should go without saying but this game is a masterpiece, it’s true what everyone says. However due to it’s limited compatibility (windows 98-xp) you’ll need a virtual machine or a game patch to run it on any newer op systems. It installs more or less without trouble and is capable of running at max graphics (which look REALLY nice btw), it does contain it’s fair share of game bugs depending on which op system you are using (in my case Windows 7). In short, grab yourself a game patch/ XP virtual machine and enjoy a cult classic.

There are dozens of in-depth reviews about “Silent Hill 2” on the Internet and I agree with most of them. Yes, SH2 is an excellent game and a true classic of the survival-horror genre. However, contrary to what most “Silent Hill” fans claim, I wouldn’t say that it’s the best game in the series (my personal favourite is “Silent Hill 3”). First and foremost, the plot is full of allegories and hard to figure out. At the end of the game you only get the “big picture”, a general understanding of what happened. Several questions remain unanswered, too many things are never explained, no matter how many times you finish the game and how many alternate endings you see (there are 6 different endings). Second, there is only a handful of different enemies to fight and even though all of them look menacing, most of them aren’t particularly dangerous or aggressive and they soon stop being scary. The zombie dogs and birds from the original “Silent Hill” were a pain in the ass but fighting them was always exciting! And third, the game is pretty long, which certainly isn’t a bad thing at all but some parts are a bit boring. The first “Silent Hill” was only 10-12 hours long but kept you on edge from start to finish! Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved the game and I believe that despite its flaws, SH2 well deserves to be considered a classic. The story, James searching for his dead wife in the cursed town of Silent Hill, is probably the creepiest and most depressing in any “Silent Hill” game. The people you’ll meet, all prisoners of this horrifying reality, are nicely fleshed out and quite believable and the voice acting is surprisingly good, probably the best in the series. Puzzles and combat are perfectly balanced and the different difficulty options mean that everybody, no matter how experienced they are in actionadventures, can enjoy the game. And of course, the setting and atmosphere are exemplary for horror games, disturbing and scary but at the same time fascinating and alluring. Unlike other console ports, the PC version is programmed quite well and works fine on modern PCs running WinXP or Win7 (there is an official patch that corrects graphic corruption issues with GeForce FX videocards). It also comes with some nice features, like the ability to save anywhere and remove the noise filter right from the start of the game, as well as the “Born from a Wish” mini-adventure that sheds some light on Maria’s story. It’s quite rare and usually expensive on ebay but definitely worth adding to your game collection if you’re a fan of the “Silent Hill” series or horror games in general.Vollständige Rezension lesen
