I needed a cheap CPU replacement for a 2nd personal computer because my old one broke down. The usage of this CPU is mostly for browsing, downloading, office work and a little bit of gaming (old games). It is stable, no problems until now and it works as it should be.
This is an entry level from Intel, based on Core2Duo technology. Thus, it can be bought at an affordable price (15-25 pounds). Performance is almost the same as E4400, which has a higher clock (@ 2 Ghz). As an entry level, it has low frequency and this is overclocking haven. In combination with a good mainboard and cooler and some experience in overclocking you can double stock frecquecy. By using a regular cooler you can reach at least 2.5 Ghz, which is greater than E6600 stock frecquency but having less L2 cache memory (2MB vs 4MB). Will you grab one?
For those who have a strong graphics card, or who do not push a processor too hard, this is perfect. I would say I push processors pretty hard with games, and with video and audio compression, but there is still enough room in the processor for folding and other tasks. Check the benchmarks on this, and you will see it is still a competitive buy at a value price despite it being three years old now. If you have no intention of buying the new processors, then this will provide great performance, and still better than the newer 2 and 4 series CPU's.
Excellent for overclocking up to nearly 3Ghz.Very good starter into the Intel Core 2 Duo world though for novices.Processor is quite pacey on it's own as the 1.86Ghz but a little tweaking and you can squeeze a lot out of it,Having said this read up at clocking before you start.www.pcstats.com enjoy!!
This CPU is doing its job well given its age and speed limitations. I will be using it on a FreeBSD file server to utilize zfs file system, so far I am only running tests on the box and am happy with it. So it's good as long as one does not expect miracles of a 1.86 Ghz dual core.
