French thriller by the director of Diva and Betty Blue about a jaded psychiatrist with woman problems who falls asleep during a session and wakes up to find his female patient strangled on the couch. He fears that he might have murdered her himself but has no memory of doing so. Film is an oddball mixture of mystery and slapstick comedy (mostly involving the dead body of the patient and the attempts of the frazzled doctor to continue working around it then finally dispose of it altogether). The movie never quite seems to find the right tone to make it all work, but it's definitely worth seeing for fans of French language films and like everything by Jean-Jacques Beineix it's beautifully shot and features gorgeously sexy actresses. It's great that Cinema Libre released an English subtitled version of the movie stateside (I've been looking for an English subbed version of this title for years) but also a shame that they didn't do a better job with the disc. The transfer is only so so--it's wide-screen but not enhanced for wide-screen televisions, which is surprising in this day and age. The scope picture ends up inhabiting an unnecessarily narrow strip of the television screen. The subtitles are burnt onto the picture and cannot be removed. The extras are also minimal--you get a trailer and a very brief interview with the director. Ultimately the disc is worthwhile if a little disappointing.Vollständige Rezension lesen
