You would think this was just another take on the Phantom of the Opera saga. However, this version was in the works before Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous play launched in London. This Phantom is wonderful to listen to, with a deep story that delves into Erik's life. The music is beautiful, and the cast is superb. I don't want to give away too much of the story. There are significant occurances that explain why Erik is the way he is. This is a wonderful musical, and a great addition to any Phantom fans collection. If you have a love for The Phantom of the Opera, or are just a fan of musicals, make sure you add this one to your collection!
Saw the play at Westchester Broadway Theatre. Since I love the ALW version (8 times and 3 recordings), I was skeptical. But this version has lovely, flowing melodies (if awkward verbiage) and a nice cast. Richard White sang at NY City Opera in The New Moon (televised). Smooth rendition could benefit from a touch of angst. He's also known for the voice of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. There is a prettier clip floating around of Kristen Chenoweth singing Home and My True Love, also Alex Syiek singing Where in the World which has any of the professional versions pinned to the mat.
Very few people know that if not for the underhandedness of certain composers, THIS is the version of Phantom that everyone would be clamoring for! The music is at times thrilling, whimsical, poignant, or downright hilarious! Maury Yeston made his fame with "Nine," which is finally being brought to film this year by the brilliant Rob Marshall ("Chicago") - and his "Grand Hotel" was sheer magic. But his best known show SHOULD be "Phantom." A clever book and tight script would have made this the toast of Broadway, but alas, it has YET to be produced on the Great White Way. This concert recording is wonderful . . . but the stand out is Meg Bussert (whom I adored in the 1979 revival of "Brigadoon" - never a better Fiona!). Bussert also thrilled the New York audience with her Guinevere opposite Richard Harris. Here she sings the role of Carlotta, the devious shrew everyone loves to hate. The price of the recording is worth it just for "This Place Is Mine!"Vollständige Rezension lesen
Don't be put off by this Phantom NOT being by Lloyd Webber. It is far superior with several lush melodies and a storyline that beefs up the Phantom's childhood as well as his parentage. At first, you might find the opening numbers a bit hokey (they will remind you of old-fashioned musicals), but stick with it. Lloyd Webber tends to use the same melody throughout, teasing here and there bits of a famous tune. Not here. Several completely distinct musical numbers will either warm your heart or break it.

The CD was touted to be in mint condition, and it did play nicely, but the jewel case was damaged. Given the price, it was so worth it, and the music is GORGEOUS!!
