More than 17 years ago, I discovered the JVC MV5 VHS/DVD recorder quite by accident - I already owned a JVC 9600 VHS recorder (perhaps the best of its kind), and, because I was so impressed with its performance, decided to stay with JVC when I went looking for my first "combo" deck. In spite of the typically enigmatic instruction manual, I was immediately impressed with the MV5s VHS to DVD copying capability, not just because of the recording quality, but especially because of the "EXPERT DUB" feature. All you do is load the tape and a blank DVD, and press two buttons - before starting the actual copy, the MV5 goes to the end of the tape and, as it winds back to the beginning, measures the length of the recorded portion of the tape - it then chooses the correct recording speed needed to fit the recording onto the DVD, cues to the beginning of video and starts the recording. When the video stops, the recording stops. No extended recordings of blankness or snow - no wondering how much was really recorded on that mystery tape from 1987! I have owned other VHS/DVD recorders since, but no other matches the simple sophistication and user-friendliness of the JVC MV5. That is why I am now on my fourth one - yes, fourth. The auto-dubbing feature finally failed on the first one about the time the recording quality went south - I think I just wore it out after ten years of hard use. The next two were bought used and eventually stopped dubbing and/or recording properly - the one I have now is another used one which, for the moment, is working quite well. As long as I have need to transfer VHS tapes to DVDs for clients wishing to preserve their family memories, the JVC "Expert Dub" MV5 will be my weapon of choice - I don't know of a better, more efficient combo deck.Vollständige Rezension lesen

Did not come with a remote. Can not perform all functions on the DVD/VHS without it. I had to buy a remote seperately. I was aware it did not have a remote when I bought it. The DVD/VHS appears to function as it should. Just a note to prospective buyers of this type of used electronic product that a remote may be required to fully control/access ALL the features of the device. I am happy with the device I received, and believe I will be able to dube my old VHS home video's to DVD when I receive my remote.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it needs to be stated it NEEDS a remote to record to DVD. It took me hours to figure it out and a lot of research but luckily I found a remote for a good price. I honestly think the owners of mine just used for watching VCR's & DVD's whereas my purpose was to record old VHS tapes to DVD. To record DVD's you must have the remote. I hope this helps some people wanting to purchase this. KC

The unit works fine on DVD - but I can’t figure out how to play a VHS and get color. They all show up in black and white video... kinda bummed, because the main reason I got it was to be able to use some of my old VHS videos for the grandkids. Perhaps I just have something hooked up wrong???
