Eightman tells the story of the eighth unit of a line of powerful robots. Something's pissed him off, and now he's rampaging around the city beating up robots, predator clones, and anything else that happens to get in his way. One player can guide Eightman in his swath of destruction, or two players can rampage together.
The game plays like something of a cross between a side-scrolling platform shooter and a side-scrolling beat-'em-up. Eightman punches and kicks, but most of the time you won't be connecting physically because whenever he punches or kicks a small wave of energy extends past his outstretched arm or leg. The wave of energy is what you'll be hitting with generally. So while the game doesn't have the close fighting of beat-'em-ups like Final Fight, it also doesn't have the projectile range in shooter games like Metal Slug.
Every time Eightman is hit by an enemy he loses one stock of health; he dies when his health stock is depleted. He also has a stock of bombs, which can be unleashed during the game for a screen-spanning attack. When two players are going at it they can simultaneously unleash their bombs for a combined super attack. The object of the game is to make it through each level with health left and defeat the level boss.
Players can pick up various power-ups during the game to aid Eightman in his mad rampage of robot destruction. Health and bomb boosts increase by one Eightman's stock of health or bombs respectively. Power boosts increases Eightman's attack range and power. The rarest and most desired power-up however, is the Eight-power boost. When this oddly shaped power-up item is picked up, Eightman temporarily gets super powerful and has much stronger attacks.
