A fantastic film camera. It has all the settings that I need and is very quite to operate. I have only really used it in full manual mode so far but I know that it would also be able to be operated in auto mode if be needed. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase.

The Contax AX is unique among high-end 35mm SLR cameras in ebing designed to provide full auto-focus using manual focus lenses. Zeiss, who made the extraordinary glassware for the Contax 35mm and 645 cameras, recognised that AF was becoming popular and asked Contax engineers to look at the problem as they did not wish to compromise the quality of their lenses merely to accommodate AF mechanisms. (Just compare the buid-quality of their MF 80mm 1.4 Planar with the 85mm 1.4 N AF Planar - the older lens is unquestionably more sturdy and durable) The AX was the solution - the camera produces the AF by moving the entire film plane back and forth inside the camera body to create the focus. It makes the body a little more deep than most conventional 35mm SLRs but the AX is lighter than the RTSIII and its ergonomics make it a joy to hold and use. The ceramic rail and ultrasonic motor are very quiet in operation and focus is assisted in poor light by a beam emitter. With a 1/6000s top speed, internal motor drive, AF and MF capability, that alone would be an impressive camera. But it does not end there. Because of the brilliant back-focusing mechanism, the Contax AX turns virtually any lens used on it - Zeiss, Yashica or 3rd party - into a Macro lens. It is amazing to peer through the viewfinder and photograph objects that are way inside the minimum focus for the given lens. Finally, it can also be used in conjunction with its D-8 Data Back which adds another level of sophistication to the operation of the camera. For anyone who has, or hopes to have some C/Y Zeiss lenses, this is probably even better than the RTSIII (referred to as the Rolls Royce of SLRs) at getting the most from their glass. The AX cost a fortune when it was released and now represents a real bargain as a used item. Grab one and be amazed!Vollständige Rezension lesen
