Designed to do one job - but it does it extremely well.
I've always used ink jet printers in the past with multiple colour inks that always seem to run out at the most inconvenient time or print nozzles that clog and ruin a print with stripes across it. If you are printing lots of pictures then ink jets are fine but having a device that you use for everyday printing and occasional photos is always going to be a compromise. The ES40 is designed to do one thing, print photos, and it does that extremely well. The dye sub process produces a far more natural "photographic" looking print than any inkjet I've used in the past and the convenience of having the paper and ribbon all in a single cartridge makes this a very practical device. You can swap out the different size media at any time. Printing direct from virtually any kind of memory card or directly from the camera is a breeze and connecting to a computer gives you even more options. Be warned though, this is a noisy beast and printing is quite slow - however it's very entertaining to watch the paper mechanism in action and the separate colour layers being printed. A postcard size print typically takes less than a minute. There's also an ID photo printing option that produces standard passport-size pictures but this feature only seems to work with images of a specific size. I'll never go back to inkjet photo printing now though.
