Another Grand Slam
My first exposure to Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band goes back to my son's four years as tenor #1 in his high school jazz band. As a good parent I sat through several competitions where the arrangements and the playing were generally very good with a few young and shaky players along for the ride. There were always a few standout bands that ended up in the state finals that had the combination of well trained young musicians executing a knock-your-socks-off tune. In about half these cases the writer/arranger was Gordon Goodwin. I had to know more. Investigation led to my discovery of the Big Phat Band and their first three CD/DVDs. In all three cases the short review is: "WOW!"
With Act Your Age Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band has done it again. Great writing and arrangements played by monster musicians that are the cream of the crop. Some of the tunes feature jazz greats that are at the top of their game: Patti Austin, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin and Nathan East.
One feature is Yesterdays performed by Art Tatum. It was cleaned up in the studio and the bad performed Gordon's accompanying arrangement around it. Audio and artistic perfection to my ears!
Perhaps the reader would be best served by hitting www.bigphatband.com and audtioning the tracks. This album consists of a CD plus a DVD with addtional material of great interest to hard core musicians like written out solos.
Every detail in this release speaks to me of the great love of great music. And the price is low compared to other artists' releases. If you could put a price on musical value this should cost $100. Please give it a listen and spread the word.
