Colorful, hilarious early Miyazaki
We love this movie! It's ridiculous, funny, and equally appreciated by the adults and children in our family. Panda Go Panda does not have the grand, beautifully detailed animation of Miyazaki's later works, but it's colorful and fun! Here's the plot: A little girl, Mimiko, is left alone by her grandmother, who's traveling out of town for a funeral. For some reason, this funeral may take weeks or months! Everyone in the village is aware that this small child is left to fend for herself while her caregiver is gone, and that's somehow normal. A baby panda, Panny, shows up at Mimiko's door, so *of course* she decides she needs to raise the panda in her house. Eventually, Panny's dad also comes by, breaks a lot of furniture, and also lives in the house. says she's the mommy, PapaPanda is the daddy, and Panny is their baby. Panny goes to school with Mimiko, and Mimiko assigns PapaPanda the role of going out to find work. He also sits around the house reading newspapers and smoking a pipe given to him by Mimiko, because that's what fathers do.
Spoiler Alert!: A cop goes to check on Mimiko and discovers the pandas. They alert the local zoo, which has been looking for their escaped pandas. Chaos ensues, PapaPanda and Panny get a job at the zoo, and they can visit Mimiko whenever they'd like.
