Ported black body Scientific Anglers System 1 456 Reel
The ported body Scientific Anglers 456 Reel is equipped with a spool that is has a dark gray drag gear ring made of PLASTIC! On casual glance at its gear ring, one would not know that it is plastic and NOT METAL. That plastic gear ring cracks and falls apart very, very easily when the spool is wound through its normal click pawl function, making that particular spool model very non-durable. One can easily identify that spool model with the plastic gear ring -- all those spools with the tell-tale 3 rows of fenestrations have a plastic gear ring. Some of the models with 2 rows of fenestrations also have the undesireable plastic gear ring, so one has to flip those spools over to check to see if the gear ring is made of plastic or metal. Most of the spools with 2 rows of fenestrations are equipped with the metal drag gear ring, which is very durable. Those durable spools are only found on the solid body (unfenestrated) model of the black Scientific Anglers System 1 456 Reel. I report this difference because I discovered it the hard way -- my plastic gears all cracked off with even gentle handling.

Scientific Anglers System1 678 Fly Reel
Simple, inexpensive, click pawl style reel. Small, compact, and not heavy. Easy to clean, maintain, and keep in fine operating condition. The black unported body version comes with a spool that has a drag gear made of metal. That spool can be identified by its 2 rows of holes. Only that version of this reel will be dependable, durable, and a great value. The ported black body version comes a spool that has a dark gray PLASTIC drag gear, which will crack apart very easily with use. That particular version can be identified by its tell tale 3 rows of holes. It is very poorly made and is a bad item at any price, something I learned the hard way after owning a few of those spools whose plastic gear broke apart with normal usage. I do not recommend the ported body version with the 3 row spool.
