Another quality offering from Phil Campbell
I first became aware of Phil Campbell as lead singer in the band White Buffalo, if you can find a copy of Waiting to go Home by that band buy it, it is excellent. Campbell has a classic british rock voice, raspy with a touch of soul, excellent range and with his own unique tone. He can play many instruments and is also an top song writer. This album is a bit laid back and I have to say a bit too much, personally I like a bit more bang for my buck. Campbell has never been in the right place at the right time and this album shows it again, released by David Gray in 2000 this would have been a smash, this is an album to cement a reputation not start one.
The album starters No Love Songs and Cold Engines are catchy numbers and excellent. The album starts to chill from that point and although each song is good in its own right the middle section could have done with a bit more. Track 9 Joy however saves the album it is just a superb song with top vocals from the man himself, this leads into Hey Mama which is a Weller / Lennon cross and wouldn't sound amiss on either of those legends records. After The Garden is another slow mover but this stands out to the other tracks, the raw emotion of Campbells voice makes this track.
Another couple of tracks like Joy and this would be a 10/10, its not going to break him into a major artist but hopefully it will receive some play and his audience will grow and grow. Give it a try.

Quality Prog Epic
BJH are one of the most underated bands in the UK where they never made it big, in Europe they are MASSIVE, check out Berlin A Concert for the People.Live Tapes as it suggests is a live recording of some of their best known earlier tracks from the late 70's. Stand out tracks are Mockingbird (sublime) and Poor Mans Moody Blues, check out Hymmn for some (dont let this put you off) Christian tub thumping. I'm an atheist and this track makes me want to go to church. If you like classic prog Yes ELP etc you'll like this, BJH are a bit lightweight for some but they still write quality tunes. Highly recommend this as a good taster for early BJH as some early album tracks are not the best. Enjoy this. I played my tape copy till it broke and have never been able to find a cd replacement until this one came up.
