NSA history from beginning up to 80's
I liked this book. The reason I bought is because of James Bamford's article in May 2006 issue of IEEE Spectrum magazine. He wrote about issues in domestic (U.S.) intelligence. About phone tapping, phone business records, and so on. The article mentioned Bamford's book, so I decided to read it. I checked the local libraries, but they all were listing this book as "checked out". This only heated up my interest. I checked Amazon too, however the book price on eBay was better.
The main subject of The Puzzle Palace is National Security Agency (NSA). It is a U.S. government agency that makes sure that the government and military communications remain secret. It also performs intelligence functions (mostly electronic) acting in the interests of national security. Both functions rely on using cryptography as a way of achieving the goal. By the way, cryptography is a branch of mathematics that deals with ciphers. And a cipher basically is an algorithm that can hide a message from anyone but the authorized parties that have keys.
James Bamford was able to trace the history of NSA, from its early days, through
the WWII, and up to the Cold War. Bamford writes less about politics, but more about people who were involved in the NSA. This is what I really like: I like reading about people.
I should point out that this book is somewhat outdated - it was published in 1982 (20 yers ago!), in the heist of the Cold War. Today, the world has changed, and an inquisitive reader would obviously be interested in learning how well NSA has adapted to the realities of modern days. Unfortunately, as with many matters related to national security, this information is hard (if ever possible) to come up with. Though still we can read a book like The Puzzle Palace, and project it into the current events.
James Bamford conveys his critical but balanced view on the NSA and its activities. In my opinion, The Puzzle Palace shows how such a sensitive agency as NSA can remain working without harming the citizens, and how the system of checks and balances works in the intelligence branch of the government.
