IBM x3650 - Mod. 7979 2U rackmount server - Heat and reliability issues
It's hard not to review the IBM x3650 7979 x-series server without mentioning at least a line or 2 about the vendor, but I'll keep it brief. I think this is probably one of the *less* reliable of IBM's x-series commercial servers. I'm in the IT business in a small town and I bought this to serve as a gateway machine for a customer's network. I've had 2 other IBM x-series servers in the past… an x345 and an x346, both tireless workhorses and with the small amount of maintenance they get, it's a wonder they still work as well as they do. The first x3650 I received had inherent RAM problems and seemed to run very hot even though all the cooling fans were working. I notified the vendor, and they sent another one out, which seemed to pass the initial hardware checkout ok, but when I tried to boot any type of install CD (either from the internal DVD-CD ROM or an external, or USB stick), it would never get through the boot sequence successfully, despite checking and re-checking the BIOS settings, replacing the CMOS battery, etc. Once again I contacted the vendor (whom I've been buying from for quite a few years on E-bay), and he was out of this model, but we ended up exchanging for another suitable replacement (another brand), that worked great. The vendor, who's name I can't mention here, was very helpful in making sure I ended with something that would suit my needs.
As far as the IBM x3650 79751U server… I don't think I could recommend one if you need a *reliable* server, even though they sport pretty nice features like SAS RAID, dual gigabit LAN ports, and much more.
I'm not sure what happened with IBM's x-series or if this is just a model specific problem, but there doesn't seem to be enough cooling capacity for the given size and the type of memory used. I think the heat issues are what caused the second machine to fail also (apparent BIOS issue). In retrospect, I will definitely read up on other reviews before purchasing another late model x-series server.

Pure Sine Wave 1000W inverter 12VDC - 120 VAC
Installed this inverter in a Toyota Van several months ago with extra batteries, to power a small refrigerator, several lights and a laptop computer. Operation has been flawless so far, and the automatic low-voltage cutoff will keep you from getting stranded with no starting power if you don't happen to have a battery isolator for your secondary batteries! Great value for the price.😉
