Genetic Apocalypse
Blood Music is a great story about a nerd who creates intelligent cells and then injects them to smuggle them out of his lab. There are hilarious moments with his girlfriend as he gains superpowers. Also, the SF Masterworks edition of this book has a picture of the Twin Towers covered with intelligent slime. Interesting fact, there.
