Yesterday's People
A jaunt down Memory Lane! That haunting theme music, the hypnotic title sequence... ahh. It all sounds a bit jolly-hockeysticks these days and filming techniques have improved considerably in the intervening 34 years, but I have never forgotten this series or the impact it had on my young and impressionable mind. The commentary by original cast members is hilarious, poking affectionate fun at the show and each other. I immediately set to bidding on the rest of the DVDs that are available. They don't make them like this anymore.

American remake gets it right.
Had I not seen the original Swedish film on which this is based (Let The Right One In) I would have awarded this five stars. It is an absorbing film and a refreshing reminder that vampires can be sympathetic but also violent, dangerous and downright scary. Forget the wishy-washy repressed sexuality of those drips in Twilight, this is an engaging, offbeat romance with the power to shock.

Nearly 30 years on, still stands up for warmth and laughs
The recent 'reboot' starring Russell Brand has its own merits but this original from the 1980s still stands up in its own right. Dudley Moore makes alcoholism seem charming and a jolly good fun- if you have endless supplies of dosh to fund your escapades of course. Liza Minnelli is suitably doe-eyed as the girl from the wrong side of town - if you can overlook the fact that it's Liza frickin' Minnelli, that is. Best by far, in my opinion, is Sir John Gielgud as long-suffering butler, Hudson. He steals this picture, I find, with his lugubrious delivery.
A modern classic? Maybe, but avoid at all costs the lamentable sequel, Arthur 2 On the Rocks.
