Outstanding Classic on August 1914
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Brilliant work discussing the months leading up to the outbreak of World War I as well as the pivotal battles of August 1914 that decided the course of the war. The Author's winning style and clear prose makes events as dull as troop movements entertaining.
As for those reviews which criticize the central premise, Tuchman's argument is less that the great powers stumbled into WWI than that the war was preventable rather than inevitable. She does an excellent job highlighting German bellicosity and lust for conquest, making the criticisms based on the supposed failure to take into account the German desire for war unfounded. All in all, a classic that will sit well on any bookshelf.

Brilliant Account of Tolkein, Lewis, and the Great War
Excellent account of how World War I was the natural result of many of the follies of Modernity, and how, while a generation was lost both during and after the catastrophe, Tolkein and Lewis adhered to the timeless truths of Christianity to proclaim hope to a benighted civilization. In recapturing the spirit of both the Christian and the mythological tales of valor, Tolkein and Lewis's works shine as beacons of light in a century too often clouded by darkness. Loconte's account of the War's formative influence on their works is masterful and compelling; I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in either the Great War or these two heroic writers.
