Here's To SHIRLEY!
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich I remember seeing a full page ad in Billboard...that had Shirley's picture on it, circa 1992 (the same picture as this album) and it read as follows: "If you LOVED "Unforgettable," you will LOVE "Here's to Life!" Okay. So I just kept flipping through the magazine wondering to myself who Shirley Horn even WAS. I honestly had never heard of her.
A few weeks later, I was home sick from work with the flu and my other 1/2 (at that time) gave me "Here's to Life" for Valentine's Day, 1992. I was in a complete Nyquil fog, but managed to get up from off the couch, pop the CD in and lie there listening. At first, I thought to myself, "YIKES! Her voice is really DEEP!" Then I thought to myself, "...and the songs are REALLY slow." I kept listening until I got to the last cut, "Estate," and that's when I recall the magic happening. The TRUE connection, the SOUL connection. I programmed that track on REPEAT and it must have played at LEAST another 25x before I fell asleep and woke up to it a few hours later. The tenderness with which she infused each song was incomparable. The "deep" voice suddenly lost its "deepness" and became "tender and romantic." I was under her spell. After that, I was hooked on "How Am I To Know," "Isn't It A Pity," "If You Love Me" and "Wild Is The Wind."
About a week later after I returned to work feeling better, I began buying each one of her many albums over the course of 3 months. I now own every CD she's ever released and had the honor of seeing her live in concert twice. The first time, I got to go backstage to actually meet her. She quietly studied me in my leather biker jacket (and tie) as if to say, "This 30-something thug actually loves my music???" Incidentally, she must have had the flu herself because her table was cluttered with empty Robitussen bottles and an ashtray overflowing with lipstick-encircled Pall Mall Red unfiltered cigarettes! LOL! The second time, I got to give her a hug and a kiss in exchange for another autograph. (The first time I saw and met her, she autographed my "Loving You" CD and the second time, my "Here's To Life" CD.) She didn't have the flu THAT time thankfully. She was in good health, but required assistance in getting up onto the stage; most likely due to age and her struggle with diabetes. A fan was also sweet enough to have baked her (Shirley) a "Here's To Life" cake with a very lifelike Shirley Horn face (as the photograph on the front of the CD) made out of rich, buttercream frosting! :-)
Shirley's voice continues to warm my heart and whenever I hear this album, I'm reminded of how blessed I was to have received it with love so that I would come to know the most talented, most gifted singer/player of songs on the face of this planet. She was classy, warm and absolutely enchanting and I will never forget one of the most "starstruck" nights of my entire life. I nearly floated home after the show!
Long live the legacy of Shirley Horn and God bless her family always. If Heaven has a piano bar, you KNOW who the featured act is.
