Preschool level
Perhaps useful for a pre-schooler, but totally inadequate for my 6th grader. My fault. I didn't look closely enough.

Great story, not especially well-written
The story of Eric England, a Marine competitive shooter and a very successful sniper in Viet Nam. I met Top England when we were on the Camp Butler, Okinawa pistol team, in 1969/70, but I never knew about his "other life" until I started seeing his name and that of our team captain, Don Bartlett, in magazines and history books.
So the story is, indeed riveting and compelling, at times deeply moving. But the book is rather poorly written. The author seems to have bought stock in Roget's Thesaurus, and spares no expense in stringing together words from the national spelling bees. In many cases, the words just don't go together, or don't mean what he wishes they meant. Some of his descriptions and turns of phrase are really good - humorous, sardonic, vivid, and even touching. But there are just so many of the other sort!
In addition, the book appears to have been self-published, and while there is most certainly nothing wrong with that, it was obviously proof-read and edited by Spellcheck or something similar. There are many dozens of instances of wrong words, missing or duplicated words, and what we used to call "malapropisms."
So I recommend the book based on the power of the story and the genuinely heroic character of its subject. It is also valuable in gaining a vision from afar of the war, itself, and the cultural chaos it generated in America. For all the misplaced verbosity and shoddy editing, the book tells a true story - a story of great value - a story that will be banned and burned within a decade,I suspect.
(I was flagged by an E-bay censor, probably a spell-check algorithm, warning me about a naughty word, but not saying what that word was. I suspect it was "malapropism." The character Mrs. Malaprop is a humorous aunt who gets mixed up in the schemes and dreams of young lovers in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's 1775 comedy-of-manners "The Rivals." One of the funniest aspects of Mrs. Malaprop's character is that she often uses an incorrect word to express herself. )
