Great book for young readers,

Living here in the Virginia county where Mt Vernon is located is the background to my attention of the publication of this book. The Illustrations are very well done, and the text goes thru tells of the respect that President Wahington had for Hercules, his chief chef. What some critics of the book write shows me that they have not actually read it page by page. If they had they would see a story of a very determined father and his eager daughter who are living an unspoken reality. Despite the admiration of Hercules by the President, his wife Martha, or the famous guests who frequented Mt Vernon, the chef and his daughter, Delia, did not have, nor would they see freedom. This is the reality of life in the early days of the United States. No effort to sugar coat or gloss over that part of history should be kept from informing our youth. This is a book to be shared, including the referenced recipe from a Custis family cookbook which is included in this publication. During the middle of February my family will be visiting Mt Vernon and later making this cake as we all read this book together.
