Target:Patton - a good book, worth reading.

Some of the details given of what Allied OSS (Office of Strategic Services - forerunner of the CIA) units did were unexpected, but I suppose that's how it was. Much information is also given about Soviet infiltration of the US and English governments, especially the Roosevelt administration. I didn't know that the OSS was working with the Soviet NKVD (later renamed the KGB) and was also infiltrated by Soviet agents. It seems Patton's superiors didn't like him very much in the first place, and became more and more convinced he was unbalanced after he made several negative remarks about the Soviet Union. I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that after reading Bill O'Reilly's book first and then this one (which I think is the better of the two), I'm pretty sure George S. Patton was assassinated, probably by the NKVD with the assistance of some of our OSS personnel. It was a tragedy for the general but also for our country as a well.

A nice, sturdy volume of plans of buildings designed for the Third Reich.
I see the Wall Street Journal couldn't restrain itself from giving this book a somewhat negative review; not so much of the book itself, but of Albert Speer's work and the style of architecture that came to characterize the Third Reich. That is their opinion, and they are entitled to it. But please permit me to dissent from it. The physical book itself is beautiful, with the text in French and English, and with many colored plans and diagrams of the monumental buildings that Adolf Hitler and Albert Speer designed for Germany but, due to the war, were never actually built. The models and plans, though, still exist, and these are covered very well in this volume. Some people will like this 'neo-classic' style of architecture and some will not. But if you are interested in the architecture of the Third Reich at all, I think this is the book you will want to own. It's not a cheap book, but the quality of the volume itself is worth the price. I think in the future this book will become more valuable and eventually be hard to find. If you don't read French, then those pages will seem sort of a waste of space for you, which is about the only 'negative' thing I can think of to mention about the book. But don't let that discourage you from buying the it. If you are interested in this topic, by all means, get it, I don't think you will be disappointed !
