Vista - The Stepping Stone From XP to 7
I bought Vista only for the purpose of upgrading Windows XP with Service Pack 3 to Windows 7. You can't do a direct upgrade from XP to 7, Oddly you can upgrade from XP to Vista and you can upgrade Vista to 7, but to go from XP to 7 you have to do a new install (so says Microsoft). Anyone that has done an operating system upgrade by using the new installation method rather than the upgrade method probably knows that it takes a long time to reinstall and configure your programs. Personally, I'd prefer to spend the time on something else.
For those that say "it doesn't work", well it does. The upgrade was simple with the following caveats. 1) Always have a backup clone of the drive just in case something does not work; 2) You must be running Vista Service Pack 1 to upgrade to Windows 7. Using a Vista installation disc with Service Pack 1 is wise. I tried it it first with a Vista disk that did not have SP1 on it and ran into trouble when Vista's download and installation of SP1 continually failed, I had to start from scratch. 3) Use a Windows 7 SP 1 upgrade disk as it makes it a lot easier. 4) Expect the installation program to tell you that you have to make changes before you can continue. For instance, I was told to remove Windows Shell, but there is no option to uninstall it as it was part of XP I deleted the program without making any edits to the registry and the installer liked it. I found that most of the programs I had that ran in XP ran in 7. Some drivers had to be replaced, like the LAN. Because the LAN driver has to be changed you will need to have the Windows 7 version of the driver available on your computer or on a disk or drive that can be run from your machine. You will not be able to access a network drive or the internet.

Good Idea
I rarely buy warranty plans because you pay more than you'll get back, which is the same with insurance. They couldn't stay in business if they did not collect more than they pay out. But, because my purchase was a well used HVAC component that neither I or the seller could adequately test it just made sense to transfer the risk of failure to a third party. The cost was nominal and the risk of loss high enough that purchasing the protection plan made sense.

The RCA RP8070 CD changer I purchased works well and appears to be a quality product. It lacks some features that Sony CD players possess like the ability to toggle the time played on a track to time yet to play or the remaining time left on the CD. It can only show info on 15 tracks as compared to Sony's 20 tracks. The remote is rudimentary as it is a universal remote that can control other items as well. While playing, some lights on the display flash, which is distracting. Overall it's good.
