Not that bad, but require more work than expected.
Board overall quality and material used: 8/10
The board doesn't feel cheap. However, the heatsink does not sit completely on top of the two audio chip, which could potential damage the chip due to uneven and overheating, if used at heavy load under extended periods of time. None the less, for normal used, this is not a problem.
Board overall hardware design: 6/10
There is a switch to decide whether to used Bluetooth or the Line input (RCA input). The switching is not automatic upon bluetooth connection. However, you won't ear anything from the Line input if a Bluetooth devices is connected, this mean that auto switching has been partial implemented during manufacturing/design process. Moreover, the amp must be turned OFF before switching from one mode to the other. Not doing so will not only damage your ear, but also your speakers.
Overall audio quality: 4/10
The audio quality delivered is adequate. At low volume, there is a lot of noise (hiss), even after reducing the gain to the minimum, the noise is still terrible and can be heared clearly at a distance of 5 meters. This mean that even at the smallest setting, the gain is too loud. Instead of using dip switch with 4 preset gain setting, the manufacturer should have opted for 2 small potentiometer. At high playback volume, the noise is not noticeable.
The noise (hiss) problem can be solved by replacing certain SMC resistors. I'll post on my github the procedure when I will do the modification, for those interrested.
Bluetooth quality: 8/10
The Bluetooth audio input is as good as the Line input. However, Bluetooth communication with MacOS devices is bad. Rarely, the audio will get heavily distorded to a point where it is only loud noises coming out. Below 10% volume, the bluetooth devices will mute itself as if the sound was at 0. This problem doesn't occur with Android devices. None the less, on Mac, when it's working, it is working well. Also, the Bluetooth range of this device is phenomenal.
Built-in OEM software quality: 1/10
Everytime the bluetooth is connected/disconnected or that the volume is change (depending on the devices used), a loud notification sound is emited.
The smart colling as 2 cooling settings: all or nothing. It is not gradual. When cooling is required, the fan kicks in at full speed and is very loud when no sound is playing.
The lack of easily customisation tool, such as changing the bluetooth name or any features will requires you to buy a AVR/SPI programmer with the proper AVR pogo 6 pin connector. On the manufacturer website, these two cost 20$ US and 45$ US respectivelly. If you go full DIY, you might be able to get around this for less than 10$. However, this DIY way is a very intensive procedure that require skills in computer engineering. The CSR8635 assembly file can be found on github for anyone interested (be careful to not brick the device).
Overall, this devices isn't that bad, but require more work than I initially expected. I am not an audiophile, but: If you plan to use this amp at more than 40% of its full power, I recommend it for you. However, for watching movies, or relax music, at "low" volume, avoid and look on Reddit or any audio forum to determine what is best for your needs and money.
