The Egyptologist
The Egyptologist, a historical fictional narrative, is a witty look through the eyes of British Egyptologist (Trilipus - fake, fraud or "fairy"), an Aussie detective ( Ferrel - brilliant, insane or evil) and the American Fiancee (Margaret-drug addict, vamp or savvy heiress). The entire convoluted (tongue and cheek) mystery is unraveled through a series of letters which slowly reveals a tale of love, mystery, dishonor, drug addiction and greed all set in the in the early 20th century across 4 continents (America, Europe, Asia and Australia).
The humor, which will slip by you if you are not paying attention, is complicated, quite first rate and always presented in a serious yet tongue and cheek sort of way. For instance Atum-hadu, the fictional Eyptian pharoah from the XIIIth Dynasty, (1615 BC)name translates into "Atum-is-aroused" and is allegedly famed for his ponographic poetry named the Admonitions of Atum-hadu contained on pieces of papyrus containing 80 surviving quatrains. His father is described as the creator-god who created the next generation of gods by masturbating onto fertile soil.
For all of its long winded love letters and seeming irrelevent minutia the ending is quite moving, unpredictably morbid and insightful. Uncovering the facts leading to a conclusion of what became of Ralph Trilipush et. al, requires a careful excavation of reading between the lines. Enjoy the adventure.
