"The Swimmer" an 'indie' film ahead of its time.
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Based upon a short story by John Cheever (1912-1982) the film follows Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) as he crosses a Connecticut suburb one Sunday morning in late summer. Clad only in swim trunks, he appears seemingly out of nowhere and wants to 'swim home' via a network of pools leading across the landscape. The reactions from his friends range from bemusement to puzzlement as what he tells them contradicts what they know - or THINK they know about his life.
Wonderfully acted with a great score (by Marvin Hamlisch, his first) and beautifully photographed, the film captures the feel of late summer as the days wind down towards autumn.
The Blu-Ray transfer is *GORGEOUS* and the extras quite interesting among them the short story read by the author.
Mr. Lancaster is superb, Ms. Landgard delightful. Look for a very young Joan Rivers in a small part and Marge Champion who only recently passed away in October 2020 at the age of 101.
I love everything about this film since I first saw it in the early 1990s on videotape.

Great Soundtrack - Underrated Movie
0 von 1 finden das hilfreich When Ang Lee's film "Hulk" arrived in theaters in 2003 it wasn't quite what audiences expected. Adding parental and inter-personal conflicts into what was supposed to be a simple summer bang-up movie turned off viewers and critics. Upon watching it again three years later, I have a better appreciation of the film, its special effects and Danny Elfman's score. The music is as good as his work on the "Spider-Man" films if not better. His use of East Asian motifs and vocals add a distinct flavor to this soundtrack that mesh quite well with the visuals on the screen.
I've heard a sequel is in the works; I don't expect Ang Lee to direct but I would be curious to see what direction they take the franchise. A prudent move would be to re-use Elfman's music as much as possible to maintain some continuity with the initial film.
Remember, music appreciation is a very personal matter. You may not like this soundtrack at all but it does sell quite cheaply on Ebay (under $5.00 usually) so your'e not making a huge investment if you choose to bid on a used copy as I did.
