A love story boldly lived and proudly told
"For a Lost Soldier" is an important cinematic representation of European experience in World War II. While coming of age stories that take place during that period of history are not unusual, Roeland Kerbosch's film fully embraces a gay perspective that is often merely alluded to in war narratives, for example in Agnieszka Holland's "Europa Europa," which was filmed a few years previous. I am glad to see "For a Lost Soldier" available on DVD and accessible to Region 1. As a transatlantic love story, a bold reflection of the experiences of gay men in the military, and as a coming of age narrative, this film merits continued wide distribution.

Good not only for the face but also in general as skin moisturizer. I even the balm with a back applicator. I like the viscosity of the cream. Easily dispensed but not runny or messy.

Mark Beard's Bruce Sargeant calendars are more than just useful and pretty
I have long admired artist Mark Beard’s conceit of a supposedly deceased uncle named Bruce Sargeant, a painter who focused on athletic men as subject matter. With his “discovery” of Sargeant’s work, Beard even pulled the wool over the eyes of art critics before the ruse was made public. The gimmick notwithstanding, Mark Beard is an important artist of superb talent. In addition to seeing his work on public display in New York, I look forward each year to the release of a new Bruce Sargeant calendar. Unlike many admirers of sports figures, Beard (Sargeant) usually renders his male subjects in stasis rather than in motion. He imagines experiences such as camaraderie among team members, routine preparation for competition, and recovery from physical exertion as they play out behind the scenes, away from the eyes of spectators at athletic events. Thus, the viewer of his paintings becomes a privileged spectator of physically beautiful men who are engaged in ordinary activities. I also highly recommend Mark Beard’s book Bruce Sargeant and His Circle (2010). It is creates a delightfully rich tongue-in-cheek historic and cultural context for the fictitious uncle and demonstrates a keen awareness of masculine culture in Europe and the US in the first part of the 20th century. Mark Beard is making important contributions to our understanding of queer history and culture. How wonderful that we can mark that history on our wall calendars.
