Excellent, Rugged Design and High Performance
When Hewlett-Packard introduced the first laser-based machine calibration system in the 1970's, there were relatively few machines with an axis of travel longer than 120" (3m), the maximum that the 10774A Short-Range Straightness Optics could handle. Now, with larger machines becoming more and more common, the 10775A Long-Range Straightness Optics has become an essential item in the calibration engineer's toolkit. It will measure straightness from 40" to 100 feet (1m to 30m), and offers the same capabilities as the 10774A in measuring parallelism, and, with an optical square like the 10777A, squareness as well.
The optics for the calibration systems, like the 10774A/10775A, are especially robust. They're designed for calibration use, which often involves travel and rough treatment. I try to treat mine like the jewels they are, but it's good to know they'll survive some abuse.
This review may sound like an ad for HP, but it's based on actually USING their products. The most fragile component of the laser system is the laser itself, and HP's often exceed their 50,000 hour rated life. They are also incredibly stable--they have a lifetime rating of 20 ppb (yes, billion!) and a one-hour stability rating of 2ppb. While it's true that these figures are VACUUM stability, most measurements are made in air, and must be corrected for pressure and temperature. Still, a yardstick accurate within a few ppb is an amazing value.

Solid-Carbide Drill for Hardened Steel
We needed a tap drill for hardened steel, and a coated-cobalt drill wasn't hard enough. We'd heard that solid-carbide drills are very brittle, so we were especially careful to make certain that the drill was aligned with the center of the shaft we wanted to drill. We drilled dry at about 750 RPM, and it went fine, drilling a hole about 5/8" deep, pecking often to clear the chips.

Well-Made Cobalt Taps for Softer Materials
These Guhring Taps are well-made, and clearly marked. I bought them because they were made of cobalt steel, and I thought they would cut threads into hardened steel, I think about 50RC. I bought a solid-carbide drill for the tap hole, which worked fine, but the Guhring Taps couldn't cut the material. They'd probably work fine in softer materials.
