Great first step into Japanese hand planes.
3 von 3 finden das hilfreich Think I paid something like $10 or $11 USD for this. A steal. If you're curious about Japanese hand planes and would like to get your hands on one to see what all the fuss is about, this is an absolutely great way to get involved. My own ignorance held me up a bit at first. For instance, I was unaware that most Japanese planes come with a dai (wooden block frame) that is considered "90% ready", and you are expected to do the last 10% tuning yourself. There's a great 3-part series on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQytHrqMsug) that explains exactly how to undertake this "finishing process" and once I watched it, and followed the clear instructions, I was all set and understood my new plane much better. They should really include a slip of paper in the package for us "gai-jin" leading us to this video series, because I'm sure I'm not the only one who wondered, "why is this blade so damn tight?" when I first opened my new plane.
But overall, go ahead and grab one, heck grab two, I've rarely spent $10 on anything that normally runs in the $100 price range and had it work so ridiculously well. This thing makes long paper ribbons now that its tuned up right. However, if you don't watch the videos and take the time to tune up your new $10 plane, don't complain when it works like a...$10 plane. If you buy one and take the time to tune it up that last 10%, you'll be amazed how well this thing works.
