There's a Reason Why STEELEYE SPAN Has Been Together 40 Years
Steeleye Span is an english electric folk group performing traditional and original material.
in my opinion they are the best, but go to youtube and check them out if you havent heard them. let the youtube mix play for an hour. you'll want this.
this is their first 3 albums released on 2 cds. as i write this review, ebay is telling me i would also like celtic thunder. and i suppose i should also like lord of the dance or the imagined village. if you like those and are ready for real music from real musicians who kick ass live and sound as much like the pogues as they do the chieftains, then this is for you.
steeleye span has an great sense of material, bizarre folk tales of legions of angry elves and hungry witches all demanding beer, milk maids with tales of sailors, sailors with tales of war, woe on the road of exile, all the eternal stuff, child ballads and buddy holly, delivered with a mix of modern and traditional instruments, creative arrangements and in a variety of dialects and languages.
to me, steeleye's out-put adds up to a solid whole 40 years later in the way a lot of more 'popular' bands don't, and i think time will show that there will be steeleye fans 100 years from now, when celtic thunder has been long forgotten like the worst of glam-metal or broadway shows about lion kings.
i have never met a stupid steeleye fan. if you're hep to them, it's a nice set, and their next 5 lps have also been released in a nice package, too. if you don't know them, just give them a listen on utube. it's free, but you'll want to buy this.

life in the subburbs
this is a nice book that deals only briefly with the sensationalist aspects of this story and shows how genie wasn't really rescued, but just put into another series of ultimately frustrating experiences beyond her control. this book covers the history of abandoned or feral children and theories about the acquisition of language and much more. a smart and sad book.

thelonious monk quartet with john coltrane
anybody who dug the live at carnegie hall sides that were rediscovered and released a couple of years ago will want to hear these, the studio versions re-released in a collector's set inclusive of outtakes, false starts, etc, including some work with coleman hawkins. beautiful stuff. also available, but more obscure is the set titled simply 'thelonious monk with john coltrane' that captures a few of their 'five spot' performances from this time, again, rounded out by coleman hawkins, and a solo monk piece. i'd recommend this set for anybody who digs monk and trane and this beautiful music that ranges from eccentric and mellow to passionate bop exclamations and leaps of imagination, and the great unspoken, if you dig bop. you dig bop, if you like kenny g, just don't worry about it, maybe your kids will give it to you someday.
