Best saw (blade) for timber framing.
I timber frame and this saw is my go to hand saw. It has an aggressive tooth pattern that cuts fast. Of the japanese saws I've encountered it is the stiffest blade and cuts the widest kerf. I find that this helps keep the cut straight and true. I also like that it is a pull saw, whichmeans that there is no deflectionof the blade on the cut stroke.
It is exclusively a crosscut saw. You can make fairly oblique mitre cuts with it, but it won't work at all for rip cuts.
These blades reliably come incredibly sharp from the factory. If you take care to clean your timbers before cutting it will hold an edge for quite a while.
I've learned to use old blades for restoration work, when there is grit in checks or the possibility of encountering fasteners. One stroke along a nail and the blade is ruined.
I bought my first Kariwaku 333 during my apprenticeship back in 2000. I've not found a more enjoyable (hand) saw to work with.
