Two Treatises of Government (Everyman) by Locke, John
    01. Sep 2016
If you ever wondered where Jefferson got his ideas for the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, look no further.
Perhaps the one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written, Locke is considered the father of liberalism. His work was so beloved by our founders, words were used to build our most beloved documents that detail how a government should be. Before John Locke, governments were Patriarchal in nature. People believed as their king would tell them, and as Robert Filmer's Patriarcha would instruct, that theirs was the "divine right of kings." Meaning, God made kings to rule over men. So strongly was Locke not a fan of this idea, his first treatise is dedicated entirely to dismantling this idea. In his second treatise Locke posits that governments exist only by the consent of those being governed, because as the "state of nature" requires that no man is obligated to another, and only to himself and that all men are created equal, with rights granted by God himself, to life, liberty, and property. Jefferson later referred to Locke many times stating he believed him to be one of the greatest minds to ever live. Locke built the foundation in his two treatises, which Jefferson referenced when he penned the Declaration of Independence that was sent to the King of England, and the U.S. Constitution that still exists today. Many of the terms we famously use today came directly from John Locke's works. You will not be disappointed if you love history, and wanted to know where modern governments get the idea of civil rights. Before Locke, that term did not exist, the idea of it would be unthinkable.
Mario Kart (Nintendo Wii, 2008) WITH 2 STEERING WHEELS INCLUDED
    07. Jan 2016
Feels like a classic, plays like one.
Nintendo is not shy about using their main man Mario in their games, and with a few exceptions Mario games tend to be the best in show. When Mario Kart came along, there were a myriad of racing games to choose from but nothing that truly inspired party play or the competitive spirit. In comes Mario Kart from Nintendo. At first it just seems like maybe this is some attempt at using the IP they created to jump into a genre they know nothing about but immediately it becomes apparent this game shoots straight to the top. What makes classic Mario games so fun are not that they include cute little characters and a fun child-like appeal but are truly some of the more challenging, fun games in a market that is flooded mostly with bad games. Let's be clear about one thing, very rarely when faced with the choice between playing something Mario-like and something else will you choose the latter, and Mario Kart is no exception. This game has all the things you love about the classic Mario experience but Nintendo has taken that and stuffed it into a racing game. And at first you may wonder whether that is going to be fun, after all, most people will choose some other type of game to play with friends over a racing game. But here this becomes the game you choose. Not only is it challenging, and competitive, and fun, but the nostalgic aspect of the Mario world, all combined into a game you play on your couch with friends make this really the game of choice when you have one of those little get togethers. When Mario Kart came out all the way back in 1992 on SNES it changed all racing games from that point on. It was the gold standard of racing, and many years later developers still try to emulate its successful level of gameplay design. Now although the graphics have been updated over the years the gameplay remains very much the same, and that is what makes this the game it is today. You can take the same successful formula from a game that came out almost 20 years before it, change a couple of things but keep the core fun of it and you are going to design something everyone loves. When the Wii was introduced people salivated at the idea of a Mario Kart, but few would know how much based on how the Wii's gyro control design would fit into this genre. Some believe that Mario Kart for the DS got it all wrong, but when they released the updated, and redesigned Wii version simply titled Mario Kart Wii, any worries players had were completely dashed with a single play of the game. This game is the first in the series to feature Online play (which sadly has been discontinued in 2012), and a 12 kart system where 12 racers can all race simultaneously against one another. Now although at a party the Wii can support up to 4, this is plenty and will have everyone lining up to take their turn. This version of Mario Kart was also the first to allow tricks in the game which make for an exciting addition allowing for even more competitive action in a game already brimming with competition. What makes the Wii version so unique is gone is the standard controller handling to jump in and instead use the thing that makes Wii so awesome, its gyro controls, combined with the wheel addition snapped into the controller, makes it feel like you are actually driving. However, if you prefer not to use the Wii wheel, you can get away with using the standard controller or even opting for the Nintendo gamecube controller as well. I cannot say enough good things about this game, with its amazing graphics redesigned for the wii, its rock-solid controls and party aspect, this game is by far the best game you can play with friends.
