If you own (or are thinking about buying...
If you own (or are thinking about buying) a Triumph TR7 TR8, then you will need one of these firewall steering column grommets, if it hasn’t been replaced yet by the previous owner.
This is my second TR7, and the second time I’ve had to do this, and believe me, it’s a real bear of a job!
A hateful and painful task that never gets easier!
Literally the worst thing to repair on the entire car!
That said, it is so worth doing!
The quality here is excellent! Poly bushings don’t break down like the original rubber ones do, but are slightly harder to install.
There are older Triumph postings online related to replacing this grommet that may help you with installation. Personally, I made a simple pressing tool using a hardened steel bolt, a big beveled washer, and a heavy steel bracket and it eventually popped in using lots of soapy water, poking, prodding, swearing, and the assistance of an impact driver.
And it’s still not easy! Ha!
These ones are superior in quality than those offered by Moss Motors, and at a far better price than everywhere else.
Buy this one, the specialty places cost more, hit you hard with shipping costs, and offer nothing that’s superior or better!
I have two TR7s now, and I am done with replacing these grommets and will not do another. Yay!
Keep in mind, when replacing this grommet, it’s best to replace the upper and lower steering column bushings at the same time. Those two pieces are cheap and easy as pie to do, so you might as well add them to your shopping list. Also, put them in after you’re finished with the firewall grommet!
Also note that the grommet goes in from the engine side of the firewall, with the beveled end popping out into the cabin of the car. Some people do this backwards.
