Beautiful, simple, moving
Ruo Ma, as the title suggests, is seventeen, a member of the Hani ethnic group who live in a particularly beautiful area of Yunnan, China, a misty landscape of terraced rice paddies abd deep green valleys. Ruo Ma is a total innocent. she believes that people tell the truth and that they will keep whatever promises they make. When she first falls in love -- with a would-be photographer from the city who regards the truth as something that can be ignored if it's inconvenient -- Ruo Ma is in for not one but two rude awakenings.
The story is simple: a young girl's first love. It could happen anywhere, to any girl. This timeless story is told in bold elegant strokes. Ruo Ma sells corn at the side of the street. Because she is beautiful, tourists continually snap her picture. The young photographer has run out of the money his city girl friend loaned him for this trip -- which was designed to give him a chance to develop his talent and take some photographs of commercial value, or get a regular job. Seeing Ruo Ma, he has an idea: he will start a business charging tourists to take her picture. This begins the first romance of Ruo Ma's life.
The strengths of the film are the storytelling style, the actors, the beauty of the setting, and the extraordinary beauty of Ruo Ma's face. The young woman who plays her has never acted before, but she's a heartbreaker. I spend a good deal of my life in Southeast Asia, and I know hundreds of young people like her -- painfullt honest, unaware of "cool" or irony, trusting in their acceptance that people are who they say they are and will do what they promise to do. Sooner or later, as the cities of the world grow out to meet them, their hearts are broken. This is a wonderful film about a beautiful girl's first broken heart, and her first steps into the world that will soon surround her.
By the way the DVD I bought was flawless.

The Best Children's Film Ever
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich My Neighbor Totoro is a unique masterpiece, possibly the greatest animated film ever made for children. Hisao Miyazaki has made some other terrific movies, especially "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle," but "Totoro" tops the list.
Two little girls move with their father to a rundown house on the edge of a slightly oppressive-looking forest, to be near their mother, who's in the hospital. We don't know where they've moved from, but the natural beauty of their new home exhilirates them, and almost immediately they begin to have encounters with the spirits of the forest. The biggest of these is Totoro -- enormous, slow-moving, fluffy, weightless at times, and perfectly willing to have two small girls curl up on him and take a nap. Together, two littl egirls who are worried about their mother's health, enter a world of pure enchantment.
Most unique, THIS IS A CHILDREN'S MOVIE WITHOUT A VILLAIN. No evil stepmother, wicked witch, goblin, dalmatian-coat-wearing woman -- no tears, no heartbreaks, and no nightmares afterwards. Just one amazing encounter after another, one imaginary realm opening into another, with an ending that is full of gentle hope.
There's nothing anywhere like MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. Oh, and for little kids, the American dubbed sountrack is fine, but for older kids who are up to some very simple subtitles, the original Japanese actors are really wonderful.
Buy this movie, even if you're an adult who doesn't have kids.

Not His Best, But Still Wonderful
Koreeda is my favorite living director, and I've loved virtually all of his films. This is beautifully acted and filmed, but it's not as emotionally affecting as it might have been, and there are perhaps one or two too many subplots that detract from the interaction of the four young women. The acting among them, however, is just short of miraculous -- I felt in every scene that each of them had an absolutely real and completely different inner life, something I rarely see in a film. He's a great directors and this is a very good film, just not one of his best,
