ICL8038BC in Ceramic Package works Great!
Very hard to find ceramic, B version of the 8038 waveform generator. Substantially better electrical and thermal characteristics than the more common plastic C version make this device perfect for a voltage controlled oscillator application.
Because the ICL8038 does draw some significant current for a single IC, these run a little hot but the ceramic package has better dissipation, reducing the internal temperature and improving stability. Adding a small 14-pin DIP heatsink to the device will further reduce frequency drift.
Likewise, with the application of an external voltage controlled current source that includes active duty factor compensation, the 8038 is revived as a viable IC for use in a precise music synthesizer application.
