Amazing Deal on Looks-like-new, Smoking Fast Xeon Processors; Great for Video or Scientific Computing
My processors arrived looking brand new - no scratches, no dings. I now have a 16 core Xeon + motherboard + RAM + PSU for less than the price of a fast i7.
I followed the instructions here (search for "1155-affordable-dual-xeon-pc"). I did purchase 128GB of ECC RAM instead of 64GB of non-ECC RAM, which was a $200 premium. This fully populated the RAM slots on the motherboard, but also fully enables the 4X memory channels on each CPU.
The machine is stable under memtest86, prime95, and with everyday usage under Windows 10. I do a lot of scientific computing and this is a big step up from my i7-3960k.
Be warned that most (all?) of the dual socket motherboard that can hold these chips are server motherboards and require a larger than usual case: look for XL-ATX.
