A good overview of the Byzantines' Viking mercenary unit
This book covers the Varangian Guard in all its phases, from the earliest days when it was formed from Russo-Swedes who had earlier attacked the imperial capital, up to the last days of the Empire, when a shadowy remnant of the old regiment stayed loyal to their lord to the last.
At various times, the Varangians' ranks included exiled Viking princes, exiled English fleeing the harsh rule of the Normans, and plain old adventurers. They were, in general, far more loyal to their rulers than the earlier Praetorians had been to their charges, although lapses did happen.

Anybody seriously interested in the writings and thought of H.L. Mencken should have this book. It's a look into his mind and his day-to-day life, starting after his heyday and going on up till he had his stroke.
