Kinesis is best keyboard ever, except maybe forbiddingly expensive Maltron
This is the ultimate desktop keyboard for a person who types several hours a day.
Few months ago, my wrist started to bother me towards the end of the week, and I started to look to improve the ergonomics. To my surprise, there was not much choice. Kinesis appears to be the leader (in design, not in sales.)
I did not touch-type before, now I do. In fact, keyboard design discourages the kind of search-and-peck I was used to, reaching into the other hand area. My wrist stopped bothering me. I always have a conversation started when a stranger stops by.
After I got one at work and spent two weeks getting used, I fell in love with the keyboard. I got one for home, another, 15-years old previous model with faulty controller, to experiment with modifications, and now just got one for my son who often borrows mine. I am yet to see a person who spent some time with this keyboard and did not get hooked to it.
The good things about the keyboard:
* Separate left and right hands. You do not have to twist your wrist in an unnatural way
* Thumbkeys. You get to type with your strong thumbs!
* Keywells. The idea was that you do not need to stretch your fingers; but what I like about it is that I can rest my palm on the cushions and type with the fingers alone.
* Mechanical keys. These will likely outlast the person who is typing.
* Straight columns of keys. Rows of keys in a traditional keyboard are shifted relative to each other; that carryover from the era of mechanical typewriter serves no purpose.
* Completely remapable keys and macros. Would you like to switch CapsLock and Escape like I do? No problem! You do not need any kind of program running on you machine, keyboard microcontroller will handle it all by itself. You can switch between QWERTY and Dvorak layouts in a blink of an eye. You can even program a series of keystrokes to be generated by a single key.
Things that are not as good:
* Infamous rubber function keys. The top row of keys, including F1-F12, is nothing like the rest. The only consolation is that, perhaps, you do not use them much.
* Separated left and right hand keys are good; completely split keyboard, like Kinesis Freestyle, would be even better.
* Would be so nice to have some pointing device integrated.
* Firmware development has been rather stagnant. Some enthusiasts came with the hacks of replacing the microcontroller and doing all kinds of tricks.
Comparable products:
* The only one that compares is made by Maltron. Perhaps Maltron is even superior. But there is a huge price difference: new Kinesis Advantage is priced in $300 range, while Maltron -- in $600.
This keyboard is bulky and strange looking, it will take some time to get used to it. But if your are serious about typing, this is the tool.

Useless
Flimsy, shell arrived open. Did not work. Spend a couple dollars more on a better product.

Versatile took. One of the buts in PH2 on both sides, which is strange. A lot of common, and a few exotic bits are included; work in my multitool, too.
