'the Motive and the Cue' is a line from Hamlet, referencing not only what you say and when but how and why it's said.
Having seen the National Theatre Live filmed production recently, and read Redfield's '"Letters fm an Actor" on which the play is based, I can say this is one of the great plays of the last five years. Reading it is vivid, as if you're in the rehearsal room with Burton and Gielgud in 1964. It goes fast, and playwright Jack Thorne has accomplished a bit of a time travel magic trick. So worth the purchase.
