"The Last Kingdom" is the best heroic series that I have ever seen on film.
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich This is my absolutely favorite series ever. Like all great films, they have to start with an engaging and heroic story and excellent adaptive script. "The Last Kingdom" novels by Bernard Cornwell and script adaptation by Stephen Butchard excel on both counts. The dialogue is smooth and engaging and unique to each of the great characters portrayed. The pace is hypnotic. The temptation to binge is irresistible. In my opinion, the series has achieved the almost impossible task of producing a film that is as good as the original books. If you liked the first two series of "The Vikings" you'll love every episode in this series.
The gory battles, although they are as good as any on screen, are not portrayed to satisfy vicarious violence quotas of modern filmmaking, but rather to represent the historic reality of the film and are essential to better portray the heroic conflicts of the characters. Characters who, by the way, are amazingly well cast and well-acted, every single one, amazing. The cast and crew have avoided every type of character cliché. I can't compliment the acting, casting and battle-fare enough. The production transports the viewer into the times, just wonderful. The Danes are fabulous, from Ragnar to bloody-mouthed Scarpa and all in between. Bravo to the charming hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
The direction and cinematography are top notch.
As battles in film are a sign of great production value, especially when enacted by the actors themselves, as is the case in "The Last Kingdom" series, skin and sex, are signs of corner cutting -super cheesy-overdone ad nauseam- in modern productions. Sex in the “Last Kingdom” is always in function of the story, in good taste and not over emphasized. The female cast are realistic and chosen for their acting talent and to fit their characters, not too pretty, not too sexy, just right. Brida, Hild, and the very annoying Queen are classic!
Again, cheers to the writer and directors who haven't screwed it up, yet.
Since the last of the series is due to be released this year, I have high hopes that the production will continue to make great film and not succumb to any pressure that NetFlix might impose to make the series more PC or salacious, i.e., alter history to modern ethical views and dilemmas. It is the middle ages, after all. Let it bloody well be that.
Lastly, I would like to address the Catholic Church in film. I like the way the Church is portrayed, in general. I think it is truthful and I think that God is used by many for good and for ill in the past and today. The series is more honest than the book in that regard. The book dings the Church too much, probably unfairly so. Power corrupts absolutely in and out of the Church. Religion is super-important in the middle ages and it was formative in every regard within western civilization. The filmmakers do a good job of being accurate in that regard. The dying Alfred sequence is a super moving glistening image of the redemptive power of God. The characters of King Alfred, Hild and Beooca are fabulous, allowed to be consistently faithful, and soooo well cast and acted.
I do not like the score but that might just be me.

Among best of the historic genre, A classic
Uhtred is a great hero. All the writers, characters/actors, directors and the production team have collaborated to make a series that is total classic; consistent high adventure with a clear moral compass that is so refreshing in our times of corruption and moral vacuousness. Uhtred and his loyal band are infinitely more endearing than in the books and the films are much fairer with regard to Christians, their motivations and the importance of faith in 9th century England. In other regards the creators have remained quite true to Cornwell's wonderful stories. On to Bebbanburg, On to Season 5.
