Dalek Who?
Retro seems to be the big thing at the moment. But when you add the word retro to todays music all you seem to get are octave synth saw basslines (Calvin Harris, Goldfrapp to name a few). It all sounds too computer quantized and clinical, I guess as the equipment has become more fantastic, imagination has sadly been lost.
Imagination was certainly around 31 years ago in the form of Dalek I Love You. Many members came and went, they chose synths because they were cheap enough to afford and bought a drum machine...
I located this album after hearing about them on a docu about Big In Japan. The sound is of course late 70's early 80's being cold and jangley. It is unlike Depeche Mode from the same era, less use of synths, in some respects more of a commercial version of Fad Gadget with a touch of OWD (Our Daughters Wedding). There are of course similar sounds musically to that of OMD (there are group member links here) and The Associates. Two tracks stand out on this album, 'Horrorscope' which has to be played over and over again, very infectious, and 'The Mouse That Roared'. The latter being an amusing use of sound yet has this wonderfully simple chorus, that pulls you in showing what a well written simple song this is. This for me is the gem of the album. It is a piece of history, a period in time when synthesizers were being used as synthesizers and not as 'preset' sound sources, and when bands weren't all out to replicate Kraftwerk.
25 years later and having never heard any music from this group before (I was 7 when it was released) I got a spark of excitement, which is rare nowadays in this money driven, 'preset button' rubbish, music world.
